I stumbled on the concert while looking for things to do in New York and had to check twice that it was her, in new york, the same time we were. The fact that the concert was touted as being 'intimate' and just her and a piano sold me.
The Beacon Theatre is a couple of blocks from Central Park so Tez and I headed there for a peek and a few quick photos of the park that is sooo huge!
Central Park - at Central Park West. Also the name of a Melrose Place spin-off that didn't last.
With 30 minutes to spare we stopped in at an Asian restaurant nearby and had some delish sushi and other Asian fare.
mmm... sushi
When she came on stage you could actually see her! In her Sydney concert she was just a tiny blip, so we were really really excited to see her perform and especially so in her hometown of New York.
Yup, she looked at me when I took this photo.
"Hey, you guys are from Australia?"
She started the concert playing Blackbird by the Beatles and also did covers of Marvin Gaye, Brian McKnight and an awesome cover of Billy Joel's New York State of Mind, which led into her song Empire State of Mind. Given we were in New York, the crowd went wild!
Lady luck was with us on the night as well - the two ladies next to us had to get up and leave the concert after the 4th song because one of them was sick, so we shuffled down and had an even better view of her playing on the piano. BONUS!!
She was very warm, funny and talkative, always asking the crowd to sing along and getting us to choose which songs she was going to sing. A classy lady and a truly amazing talent. Perfect way to spend our last night in New York.
Next up - New Hampshire! State motto: Live free or die hard. Yeah!
